Choosing the Right Colours for Painting Home Interior

If you are looking for the best colours for your interior, you have to take note of the different areas, spaces, and rooms you are going to paint and their different functionalities. The choice of colour for an interior is more of a personal preference but still there are a number of standardised factors that you can consider before making your final decision.

Think of the kind of ambience you want to create when choosing the colours, while you consider the following factors:

The purpose and function of the room

When choosing the colours to use in each room, the purpose or function of a room plays a big role. The colour you would choose for the kitchen, for instance, is different from the one to be used in your bedroom.

Bedrooms and living rooms require warm and bright colours to bring out comfort, relaxation and cosiness feeling. However, cool shades of colours are suitable for office interiors to create a sober environment to work and concentrate in.

Room Orientation

You should consider from which direction the painting is exposed to sunlight and how much natural and artificial light is present, when choosing colors for your interior.

  • North – Rooms that face north receive less light throughout the day, producing a cooler effect. Therefore, consider using warm colors to brighten up the room to bring out a warm effect.
  • South – South facing rooms usually receive more light throughout the day and they are the brightest and well-lit places in a house, so cooler colors are considered to counteract the brightness and sharpness of the natural light.
  • East – East facing room receive the most light in the morning hours which make it appear yellow and bright. If such a room is mostly used in the evening or late in the afternoon then warmer colors should be considered, to brighten the room in the absence of natural light which fades away with time.
  • West – Rooms facing the west benefit from the bright rays of the sun from where the sun sets. These rooms look dull in the morning and bright in the evening. One should consider choosing cool colors so as to tone down the warmth and brightness of the sun.

Room Size

Small rooms should be painted with warm and bright colours to make them appear big, spacious and well conditioned. For large rooms, it is suitable to choose cool and dark colors since they make the room appear smaller and cosier.

Room Lighting

Avoid reflections and use cool and dull colours, if the room or space is sufficiently illuminated with natural lighting. If the room is artificially lit, consider the different types of light sources since different type of lighting present the appearance of colours differently. A room with dark wooden floors blends well with warm or neutral tones and a room with light coloured flooring goes well with contrasting colours on the interior wall.
