Difference between Eggshell Paint and Flat Paint

You have several choices of paint when you are planning to decorate a room in your house such as flat, satin, semi-gloss, high gloss, and eggshell. Both flat and eggshell finishes have a very low sheen as compared to gloss paints, but each has own set of advantages over the other.
Wondering what the difference is? In today’s blog post, our experts will help you guide through these two high-in-vogue options.

• Flat Paint

Flat paint is highly effective to disguise or hide tiny wall blemishes or bumps. Flat paint does not reflect light and because of its very matte finish, it is able to camouflage any surface imperfections, such as dents, nail holes, or patches in the wall that might otherwise show up with a reflective satin or eggshell paint. Flat paint absorbs stains and splashes easily.

As ceilings usually have the most imperfections and blemishes to hide, it is recommended using flat paint on large areas like ceilings. The major disadvantage is that flat paint is not recommended for surfaces intended to be washable.

Flat paint is only intended for interior use and not at all suitable for the exterior of your home. The compound of flat paint does not have reflection and can’t withstand any weather conditions, especially during extreme heat and rain.

• Eggshell Paint

Eggshell paints are very durable and create an excellent easy-to-clean surface for common rooms like the living room or bedroom. Unlike flat paints, eggshell paints have a slight sheen and a more reflective quality.

Even though the flat paint is easy to maintain but it is very delicate and cannot be scrubbed hard too often. This makes it less durable. Even after you have painted a fresh coat of flat paint in your home, it can end up looking rough and scuffed if scraped by furniture or something as simple as a purse buckle. Therefore, think carefully about where flat paint will work best if you are thinking of repainting any interior areas of your house.

Eggshell paint is hard-wearing and difficult to damage. Eggshell builds a very durable protective coating after drying. But despite all these advantages eggshell is not suitable for every room in your house. Be sure that your paint will be able to stand up to the constant contact if you are preparing to use it in an area where there is heavy traffic.

Eggshell paints are highly resistant to damage from weather conditions and can be bought for exterior areas. It can last a long time which makes it an excellent choice for use on front doors or windows. It is very easy to maintain and easy to clean.
